What Kroll's notices and case websites carry

These details come from Kroll's court filings and case websites; each court approves the wording for its own case, so yours may differ.

Payment methods change from case to case. In one data breach settlement, Kroll listed for the court the ways it paid class members: paper checks, ACH, E-Mastercard, PayPal, Venmo and Zelle U.S. District Court, N.D. Cal.checked October 1, 2026. On the T-Mobile settlement website, the follow-up message to people whose electronic payment failed came from noreply@digitaldisbursements.com T-Mobile Data Breach Settlement website, run by Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, Internet Archive capturechecked October 1, 2026, archived copy of March 10, 2026, a payment company that also works for other administrators. A message from that address tells you nothing by itself about which case it belongs to.

One case on this site is run by Kroll: the AT&T data breach settlement, which has that case's facts.

Why people doubt messages that name Kroll

"Kroll" is more than one business

The name covers several companies. In bankruptcy cases, notices can come from a sister unit, Kroll Restructuring Administration LLC U.S. Bankruptcy Court, S.D. Tex.checked October 1, 2026, which acted as claims and noticing agent in the Steward Health Care bankruptcy; it is not the settlement unit. Kroll also states on its own site that it is not affiliated with Kroll Bond Rating Agency and Kroll OnTrack Inc. Kroll, LLCchecked October 1, 2026. A notice about a bankruptcy comes from a different Kroll business than a class action settlement notice.

Kroll also runs breach-notification phone lines, and its hotlines page says they cannot answer questions about a notification letter or help with credit or identity monitoring Kroll, LLCchecked October 1, 2026. The corporate number in the box above, +1 212 593 1000, is the company's main line; questions about a settlement go to the number printed for that case.

The website and sender are not on Kroll's own domain

People expect a Kroll notice to point to Kroll's corporate website. On Kroll's own list, none did: it showed 48 entries (47 different websites) Kroll, LLCchecked October 1, 2026 for active cases, and none of those websites was on a Kroll address. The email sender in the filed example sits on a domain most people have never seen. Both patterns are normal for this company, and neither proves a given message is genuine, because a sender address can be faked.

Heffler, Philadelphia, and a P.O. box used twice

Older paperwork may carry a different name or city. Kroll's settlement unit was formerly Heffler Claims Group U.S. District Court, D. Colo.checked October 1, 2026, a firm whose purchase Duff & Phelps announced, in a release now kept on Kroll's site, on July 16, 2019 Duff & Phelps, on kroll.com newsroomchecked October 1, 2026. A declaration Kroll filed in one case put the unit's principal office at 2000 Market Street, Suite 2700, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103 U.S. District Court, D. Minn.checked October 1, 2026; a later one gives One World Trade Center, 285 Fulton Street, 31st Floor, New York, New York 10007 U.S. District Court, S.D. Ind.checked October 1, 2026. P.O. box 225391 appears on both the T-Mobile site and a postcard for a different case, so the box number alone does not identify your case.

A February 2026 copy of Kroll's services page says Kroll has managed “more than 4,000 settlements” Kroll, LLC, Internet Archive capturechecked October 1, 2026, archived copy of February 19, 2026. That is Kroll's own figure; this site found no independent count.

How to check a notice against Kroll's case list

Kroll publishes a list of its cases. Its hotlines page sends people with case questions to that list, at kroll.com/en/settlement-administration-cases Kroll, LLCchecked October 1, 2026.

  1. Find three things on your notice: the case name (for example "Smith v. Company"), the court, and the website address printed on it. Type nothing yet.
  2. Open Kroll's list by typing the address from the box above into your browser. Choose the Active filter, then use the A-to-Z strip or the name search to find the company named in your notice.
  3. Compare the website on Kroll's list, letter by letter, with the one on your notice. A matching entry tells you Kroll lists that case and that site. A missing entry is not proof of a fake: only the Active cases were counted here, and a case can be missing from the list for ordinary reasons.
  4. Confirm the case in the court record. The court's order approving the notice names the administrator and the settlement website. Looking up a class action case shows how to find it.
  5. Reach the case website by typing the address yourself. The Class Member ID or Claim ID on your notice is used there, on the case's own claim form.

A payment email is checked the same way: reach the case website from Kroll's list or the court order, and read that case's payment questions.

Documented incidents and fact-checks

East Palestine: a court replaced Kroll

In the East Palestine train derailment settlement in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the court found "sufficient reason to believe" Kroll did not correctly implement the Plan of Distribution. On June 11, 2025 U.S. District Court, N.D. Ohiochecked October 1, 2026, it ended Kroll's appointment and named Epiq as substitute administrator. On December 22, 2025 U.S. District Court, N.D. Ohiochecked October 1, 2026, the court approved a stipulation in which Kroll agreed to pay the class $17,250,000.00 U.S. District Court, N.D. Ohiochecked October 1, 2026; the stipulation calls the problems "alleged violations or errors", and Class Counsel's motion was denied as moot after the stipulation.

That record is about payment calculations in one settlement, not about imitation of Kroll or the notices in other cases.

A pending federal case about settlement payments

Kroll's settlement unit is also a defendant in MDL No. 3162 U.S. District Court, D.D.C., In re Class Action Settlement Administration Litigation, No. 1:25-mc-00179-JDB, Dkt. 143-1checked October 1, 2026. In that combined federal case, class members claim that settlement administrators and their payment and banking partners kept value that belonged to settlement funds; the docket history is kept on the Epiq page. Kroll and the other administrators asked the court to dismiss the case on July 17, 2026. Nothing on this page reports a decision on that request.

A Kroll text message, checked by a fact-checker

A text Kroll sent in the T-Mobile data breach case was examined by a fact-checker, who rated it genuine: Is the Kroll Settlement Administration LLC Text Message a Scam or Legit? (Oct. 24, 2022). That rating covers that one message, not a text you receive now.

What was not found

No court order, attorney general notice or Federal Trade Commission warning describing a scam that uses Kroll's name turned up in the records read for this page. Small websites that say such scams exist cite no primary source. That is a gap in the record, not evidence either way.

What Kroll's own pages say, and do not say

We found no Kroll page on telling a real notice from a fake. What its pages do state is narrow: the case list is where case questions go, the breach hotlines do not handle settlement letters, and the two Kroll-named businesses in its footer are not part of it. For the warning signs that apply to any administrator, see how to tell whether a settlement notice is real.
